چکیده

Eighteen hybrid onion and 23 open-pollinated (OP) varieties were tested in southern New Mexico for plant characteristics, disease resistance, and bulb yield in order to determine if hybrid varieties outperformed OP varieties. Varieties were shortto intermediate-day in their bulbing response and were planted in the fall seasons of 1997 and 1998 and harvested the following May or June. Varieties were grouped based upon their relative maturity for fall-planted onions grown in southern New Mexico (early, intermediate, late). They were planted two (1998) or four (1997) rows per plot with plots being 8 ft (2.5 m) long and 22 inches (56 cm) wide. Plant stand per plot, plant height of seven plants, and leaf number of seven plants were measured 164 d after planting. Plots were harvested when 80% of the plant tops had fallen across all four replications of a single population. At harvest, number of seedstalks, number of bulbs, pink root incidence, and total bulb weight per plot were recorded. After removing culls, the percentage of marketable bulbs, marketable bulb yield, and average bulb size were determined. Hybrid varieties outperformed OP varieties for plant height, and leaf number but not for percentage of seedstalks, pink root incidence, percentage marketable yield, bulb size, and marketable bulb yield. In this study, most OP varieties perform as well or better than most of the hybrid varieties.

Assessment of combining ability and comparison of selected selfed and open pollinated generations clones of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) ecotypes

This study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate selfed (S1, S2 and S3) and open pollinated (OP1, OP2 and OP3) generations of alfalfa in terms of inbreeding depression and general combining ability of S2 families of alfalfa ecotypes. Selfing of selected plants to produce three generations of S1, S2 and S3 generations were performed under the field conditions and the clones of each selfed- ge...

Performance of a local open pollinated maize variety and a common hybrid variety under intensive small-scale farming practices

Given that the majority of maize farmers in Kenya are small-scale, improvement in maize production must focus on increased production per unit area. While hybrid maize varieties outperform local open pollinated varieties under conventional farming practices, their relative performance has not been tested under small-scale intensive production practices. A study was conducted in 2013 in Kitale, ...

Influence of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium application on the yield of maize in the savanna zone of Nigeria

Field trials testing the effects of five rates each of N, P and K application on three hybrid and two openpollinated maize varieties were conducted in three separate experiments on an Arenic haplustalf (USDA) at Ilora in the derived savanna and Typic paleustalf (USDA) at Mokwa in the southern guinea savanna of Nigeria. The hybrid maize varieties planted were 8516-12, 8321-18 and 8329-15 and wer...

تحمل ژنوتیپ‌های انتخابی پیاز و پلی‌کراس آنها به تریپس پیاز (.Thrips tabaci Lind) در اصفهان

Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci Lind.) is one of the important factors which indirectly restrict the proper yield of onion (Allium cepa L.). Therefore, finding tolerant cultivars to onion thrips is important. Because of many small florets, cross pollination in onion which is a biennial plant by using polycross method for breeding is suitable and easy. To produce polycross seed, bulbs of 9 self poll...
